When a sea boat is launched to recover survivors and the sea is rough, then the following should be done to limit the damage and risk to persons in the boat:
- The rescue ship should stop upwind of the area to provide a sheltered lee for the sea boat to operate in.
- Light vegetable oil or light lubricating oil can be spread by the rescue vessel to stop waves from breaking in the sea boat’s area of operation.
- All persons in the sea boat are to wear life jackets and protective clothing.
- The coxswain of the sea boat must be equipped with a portable radio so that he remains in contact with the mother ship.
