About The Compiler
Captain Godfrey Schlemmer grew up in a small town on the Garden Route called Mossel Bay. Living next to the sea, it is little wonder that he developed a huge liking and respect for the sea. When he completed his matric year he decided to apply for the Naval Gymnasium. During his year in the Gymnasium he decided to join the SA Navy permanent force and so began his naval career. He served for a total of 36 years before retiring. During his career he served in a variety of posts both at sea and ashore including command posts at sea and ashore. He completed his career as the Deputy Director of Telecommunications at SA National Defence Force Headquarters. After leaving the SANDF he felt that he was too young to retire and was persuaded to use his knowledge and experience in introducing young people to a career at sea. He joined the Lawhill Maritime programme at Simon’s Town School in 2002 and has been teaching Nautical Science for the past 18 years.
