All crew members have to be qualified according to strict international norms as set out by the International Maritime Organisation according to the STCW 95/2010 code (The regulations relating to training and certification of seafarers.)

Countries supplying a large share of the world’s crews

  • Philippines
  • China
  • India
  • Ukraine
  • Croatia

This is because traditional sources of western seafarers (UK, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, etc) are not supplying enough to crew the ships from those countries.Wages of Asian and Eastern European seafarers are lower than those paid to European and North American Seafarers.
