They are only sent on the authority of the master or person responsible for the vessel.  A distress call has priority over all other transmissions.  All stations receiving a distress call and message must immediately cease any transmissions that may interfere with distress traffic and listen on the frequency used for the call.  The call shall not be addressed to a particular station and acknowledgement of receipt shall not be given before the distress message that follows it is sent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distress call.<\/strong>  The distress call must be made in the following form:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>MAYDAY spoken three times.<\/li>\n<li>The words \u201cTHIS IS\u201d or \u201cDELTA ECHO\u201d (DE).<\/li>\n<li>The call sign or other identification of the mobile station spoken three times, eg<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"207\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_1-300x69.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_1-768x177.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_1-260x60.jpg 260w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_1-50x12.jpg 50w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_1-150x35.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Distress message.<\/strong>  The distress message is sent after the distress call and must contain the following information:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The distress signal MAYDAY.<\/li>\n<li>The name or identification of the mobile station in distress.<\/li>\n<li>The position of the ship in distress.<\/li>\n<li>The nature of the distress and the type of assistance required.<\/li>\n<li>Any other information that might facilitate rescue, eg.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"377\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_2.jpg 900w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_2-300x126.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_2-768x322.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_2-260x109.jpg 260w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_2-50x21.jpg 50w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_2-150x63.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Acknowledgement of a distress call.<\/strong>  Stations of the mobile maritime service that receive a distress message from a mobile station that is beyond any doubt, in their vicinity, shall immediately acknowledge receipt.  However, in areas where reliable communications with one or more coast stations is practicable, ship stations should defer their acknowledgement  for a short interval so that the coast station may acknowledge receipt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Form of acknowledgement.<\/strong>  The acknowledgement will take the following form:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The distress message MAYDAY<\/li>\n<li>The call sign or other identification of the station sending the distress message spoken three times.<\/li>\n<li>The words \u201cTHIS IS\u201d (DE)<\/li>\n<li>The call sign or other identification of the station acknowledging  receipt spoken three times.<\/li>\n<li>The word \u201cRECEIVED\u201d (R; R; R)<\/li>\n<li>The distress signal MAYDAY, eg.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"276\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_3.jpg 900w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_3-300x92.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_3-768x236.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_3-260x80.jpg 260w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_3-50x15.jpg 50w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.2_fig_3-150x46.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Every mobile station which has acknowledged receipt of a distress message shall, on the authority of the master or person responsible for the vessel, transmit the following as soon as possible:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It\u2019s name.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s position.<\/li>\n<li>The speed at which it is proceeding towards and the approximate time it will take to reach the mobile station in distress.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, if the position of the ship in distress appears doubtful, ship stations should also transmit, when available, the true bearing of the ship in distress preceded by the abbreviation QTE.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Imposing silence on the distress frequency.<\/strong>  If the station controlling the rescue operation feels it is necessary to impose silence on a distress frequency it may do so as follows:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.3_fig_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"191\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.3_fig_1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.3_fig_1-300x64.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.3_fig_1-768x163.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.3_fig_1-260x55.jpg 260w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.3_fig_1-50x11.jpg 50w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.4.1.3_fig_1-150x32.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To lift the silence the following is sent:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The distress signal MAYDAY.<\/li>\n<li>The call \u201cALL STATIONS\u201d OR \u201cCQ\u201d spoken three times.<\/li>\n<li>The words \u201cTHIS IS\u201d (DE).<\/li>\n<li>The call sign or other identification of the station sending the message, ie \u201cRCMT\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The time the message was handed in for transmission, ie \u201c012205Z JUNE 2000\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The name and call sign of the mobile station which was in distress, ie \u201cSTARLIGHT MNOP\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The words \u201cSEE LONCE FEENEE\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A distress call and message is sent when a vessel is in grave and imminent danger.
