{"id":500,"date":"2020-10-27T19:48:02","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T19:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/?p=500"},"modified":"2020-10-27T19:48:02","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T19:48:02","slug":"ship-disabled-or-in-distress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/2020\/10\/27\/ship-disabled-or-in-distress\/","title":{"rendered":"Ship disabled or in distress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If a vessel is disabled or in distress the following actions should be considered:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If it is disabled and the safety of the crew and vessel is not an immediate issue.\n<ul>\n<li>Hoist\/activate the not under command shapes or lights.<\/li>\n<li>Try and repair the vessel.<\/li>\n<li>If the crew cannot repair the vessel, then assistance should be sought by radio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If the ship is disabled and the safety of the crew and vessel is at issue.\n<ul>\n<li>The not under command lights or shapes should be displayed.<\/li>\n<li>An URGENCY  (PAN PAN x 3) message should be sent giving the ship\u2019s position, the nature of the emergency and the general situation.<\/li>\n<li>If there is a possibility of the ship having to be abandoned, then the lifeboats should be prepared for launching and additional provisions and blankets placed in them.<\/li>\n<li>If the sea is rough, attempts should be made to get the bow into the wind  by streaming something suitable to act as a sea anchor.<\/li>\n<li>If in shallow water, consider dropping the anchors.<\/li>\n<li>If there is a possibility of grounding, then the water tight doors should be closed.<\/li>\n<li>If the situation warrants it, all crew members should be wearing life jackets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If the ship is in distress and there is imminent danger to the crew and the vessel, then the following should be implemented:\n<ul>\n<li>The lifeboats and rafts should be prepared for launching.<\/li>\n<li>A distress message (MAYDAY x 3) should be sent giving the ship\u2019s position, and the nature and details of the distress.<\/li>\n<li>All watertight doors should be closed.<\/li>\n<li>All crew members are to wear life jackets.<\/li>\n<li>If there are rescue vessels nearby, the crew should remain onboard until the last moment.<\/li>\n<li>If abandonment is unavoidable, the engines , if they are still operating, should be stopped and the lifeboats and rafts should be launched.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_257\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-257\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.2.4.8_fig_1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.2.4.8_fig_1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.2.4.8_fig_1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.2.4.8_fig_1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.2.4.8_fig_1-146x146.jpg 146w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.2.4.8_fig_1-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.2.4.8_fig_1-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.2.4.8_fig_1-75x75.jpg 75w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.2.4.8_fig_1-85x85.jpg 85w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.2.4.8_fig_1.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-257\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Typical life jacket.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If a vessel is disabled or in distress the following actions should be considered: If it is disabled and the safety of the crew and vessel is not an immediate issue.
