{"id":285,"date":"2020-10-20T20:10:09","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T20:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/?p=285"},"modified":"2020-10-20T20:12:45","modified_gmt":"2020-10-20T20:12:45","slug":"sextant-errors-and-their-correction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/2020\/10\/20\/sextant-errors-and-their-correction\/","title":{"rendered":"Sextant errors and their correction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Adjustment screws.<\/strong><br \/>\nEvery sextant is equipped with error adjustment screws.\u00a0 The design of these screws varies from sextant to sextant.\u00a0 Some have ordinary screw driver slots while others have round heads with a hole drilled through it.\u00a0 The first requires the use of a suitable screw driver whilst the others require the use of a special pin inserted into the hole.\u00a0 In order to make an adjustment the screws should be adjusted <strong>gently<\/strong> clockwise or anti-clockwise to avoid cracking the mirrors.\u00a0 One must remember that the sextant is a precision instrument and any adjustments must be made delicately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Types of error<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are approximately 10 errors a sextant may have, but only three of them are adjustable by the user.\u00a0 Two need to be adjusted by the instrument manufacturer and the rest are non-adjustable. In this module we will only discuss the first three:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Perpendicularity error.<\/li>\n<li>Side error.<\/li>\n<li>Index error.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The errors need to be corrected in the order stated above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perpendicularity. <\/strong><br \/>\nThe index mirror must be perpendicular to the plane of the instrument.\u00a0 If not, then perpendicularity error is present.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Checking for perpendicularity<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Remove the telescope\/monocle.<\/li>\n<li>Turn all shades away from the mirrors.<\/li>\n<li>Unclamp the index arm and move it to the middle of the engraved arc.<\/li>\n<li>Clamp the index arm.<\/li>\n<li>Hold the instrument in the horizontal plane and look into the index mirror in such a way that the true arc is visible to the left of the mirror and the reflected arc can be seen in the mirror.<\/li>\n<li>If the true and reflected arcs appear in a straight line, then there is no perpendicularity error present.<\/li>\n<li>If the true and reflected arcs are not in line, then error is present and needs to be removed.<\/li>\n<li>To remove perpendicularity error the first adjustment must be made.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_53\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_1-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_1-260x146.jpg 260w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_1-50x28.jpg 50w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_1-133x75.jpg 133w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-53\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Perpendicularity error (index mirror not perpendicular to the frame).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>First adjustment.<\/strong><br \/>\nWith the telescope\/monocle removed, the shades turned away from the mirrors and the index arm set to the middle of the arc, carry out the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Take the adjustment pin from the sextant case.<\/li>\n<li>Insert the pin in the hole in the index mirror adjustment screw.<\/li>\n<li>Using gentle pressure, turn the adjustment screw until the true and reflected arcs<br \/>\nappear in a straight line.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the pin carefully to avoid upsetting the adjustment and replace it in the sextant<br \/>\ncase.<\/li>\n<li>Perpendicularity error has now been removed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Side error.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe horizon mirror must be perpendicular to the plane of the instrument. If it is not, then side error is present.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Checking for side error.<\/strong><br \/>\nThere re two methods of checking for side error:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By horizon observation.<\/li>\n<li>By star observation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The horizon method is the quickest but it requires a clear horizon. The star method is more accurate but requires more practice. When using the star method a 2nd magnitude star should be used because it provides a sharp point of light. A 1st magnitude star provides too much light and cannot be clearly seen. This is on the side of the horizon mirror.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the adjustment pin from the sextant case and insert it in the hole drilled<br \/>\nthrough the 2nd adjustment screw.<\/li>\n<li>Hold the sextant in the horizontal position and look through the horizon mirror at the<br \/>\nhorizon.<\/li>\n<li>Gently turn the adjustment screw until the true and reflected horizons appear in a<br \/>\nstraight line.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the pin carefully to avoid upsetting the adjustment and return it to the sextant<br \/>\ncase.<\/li>\n<li>Side error has now been removed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Star method.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Fit the star telescope\/monocle and swing all shades away from the mirrors.<\/li>\n<li>Set the index arm and the micrometer drum to zero.<\/li>\n<li>Select a suitable 2nd magnitude star.<\/li>\n<li>Hold the sextant in the vertical position and look directly at the star through the<br \/>\ntelescope.<\/li>\n<li>Turn the micrometer drum so that the true and the reflected image of the star pass over<br \/>\none another.<\/li>\n<li>If the true and reflected images coincide exactly as they pass one another, then there is<br \/>\nno side error.<\/li>\n<li>If the true and reflected images pass to the side of one another then side error is present.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_55\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_3.jpg 900w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_3-219x146.jpg 219w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_3-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/maritimesa.org\/nautical-science-grade-11\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/11.1.4.7_fig_3-113x75.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-55\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Side error present (star method).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Second adjustment (star method).<\/strong><br \/>\nWith the telescope\/monocle in position and the index arm set to zero carry out the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identify the 2nd adjustment screw (this will be at the top or bottom of the horizon mirror).<\/li>\n<li>Remove the adjustment pin from the sextant case and insert it in the hole drilled in the adjustment screw.<\/li>\n<li>Look directly at the star.<\/li>\n<li>Gently adjust the horizon mirror so that the true and reflected image of the star coincides as the micrometer drum is turned.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the adjustment pin carefully and return it to the sextant case.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Index error.<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen the index arm is at zero, the index mirror and the horizon mirror will be parallel. If they are not parallel then index error is present. For example, when adjusting for side error it is possible to introduce index error and vice versa. It is necessary therefore to repeat the procedure for side and index error until no further errors can be detected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Residual index error.<\/strong><br \/>\nIn order to reduce the possibility of the adjustment screws becoming loose with usage, it is recommended that a thorough check and adjustment of the sextant be carried out periodically but not too often. Usually only the residual index error needs checking and any error found applied as a small correction to the navigator\u2019s observed altitudes and angles. The residual index error is checked each time the sextant is used and before an observation is taken.<\/p>\n<p>Finding the value of residual index error. Once the first three adjustments are made, the residual error is obtained by;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Horizon observation (during the day).<\/li>\n<li>Star observation (at twilight).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Finding the error using the horizon method.<\/strong><br \/>\nWith the telescope shipped, swing the shades away from the mirrors and set the sextant exactly to zero. Hold the sextant in the vertical position and look through the telescope and horizon mirror at the horizon. If the true and reflected horizons are in a continuous straight line there is no index error. If the true and reflected horizons are not in a straight line, adjust the micrometer drum until they appear in a straight line. The micrometer reading will be the value of index error. If the reading is \u201con the arc\u201d it is subtracted from the sextant angles. Readings \u201coff the arc\u201d are added to the sextant angles. The reading obtained before adjustment is known as the <strong>Sextant Altitude<\/strong> or <strong>Angle<\/strong>. The reading obtained after adjustment is known as the <strong>Observed Altitude<\/strong> or <strong>Angle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of sextant reading adjustment (residual index error).<\/strong><br \/>\nExample 1.<br \/>\nBefore taking a sextant altitude of the sun the sextant was checked and found to have an index error of 2.2\u2019 on the arc. After taking the sun sight the sextant altitude recorded was 24\u00b0 19.5\u2019. Hold the sextant in the vertical position and look through the telescope and horizon mirror at a 2nd magnitude star. If the true and reflected images coincide exactly or exactly side by side, then there is no index error. If the one image lies higher or lower than the other, then index error is present. Turn the micrometer drum until the two images coincide or lie exactly side by side. The reading on the micrometer is the index error. As before, readings \u201con the arc\u201d are subtracted from the sextant angles.
