Again strange terms apply.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abaft<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Funnel (<strong>D<\/strong>) is <strong>ABAFT<\/strong> the Main Mast (<strong>E<\/strong>) (<em>i.e. the funnel is more towards the stern than the Main Mast.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aft<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In the diagram, the accommodation is <strong>AFT<\/strong> (near the stern<strong> B<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aloft<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0A person at\u00a0<strong>A<\/strong> is <strong>ALOFT<\/strong> (<em>up the mast<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atop<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Monkey Island (<strong>F<\/strong>) is <strong>ATOP<\/strong> (<em>above<\/em>) the Wheelhouse (<strong>G<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Below<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Wheelhouse (<strong>G<\/strong>) is <strong>BELOW<\/strong> the Monkey Island (<strong>F<\/strong>). If someone has gone from one deck to a lower deck, we say \u201cHe has gone BELOW,\u201d or \u201cHe is DOWN BELOW.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Down aft<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0A person at\u00a0<strong>B<\/strong> is <strong>DOWN AFT<\/strong> (i.e.\u00a0<em>very close to the stern<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forward \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0(<\/strong>Pronounced <em>forrard<\/em><strong>)\u00a0<\/strong>The Main Mast (<strong>E<\/strong>) is <strong>FORWARD<\/strong> of the Funnel (<strong>D<\/strong>) (<em>i.e. the Main Mast is\u00a0more towards the bow than the Funnel.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Midships<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The middle point on the ship, shown at <strong>H<\/strong> on the diagram.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thwartships<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Something that lies across a ship, e.g. a THWARTSHIPS BULKHEAD runs from the port side of the ship to the starboard side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up forward<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (Pronounced <em>forrard<\/em>) A person at\u00a0<strong>C<\/strong> is <strong>UP FORWARD<\/strong> (<em>i.e. very close to the bow.<\/em>)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When on board a ship, you may need to describe the position of one object relative to another.
